Benefits of Small Steps

Have you ever started a diet and not finish? Or a project? Why did you not finish? If you are like me, you probably got caught up with the chaos of daily life. It happens to all of us! We start with passion and motivation, but the chaos of tasks, to-do lists, and goals begin to be – overwhelming. So how do I take the next steps towards success? One step at a time. Here are five steps to help you move forward.


1. Have a Clear and Compelling Vision.

Your vision is more than a crafty statement. Your vision is an exciting destination – where you want to be. If you do not know what the result looks like, you cannot have a clear plan. A vision must be compelling because it needs to inspire and recruit others to help you accomplish it. Even if you are setting personal goals, you need others in your life to help encourage you and keep you accountable.

2. Start Doing It.

One of the biggest problems we have is overthinking or making it complicated. Mark Twain once said, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks and then starting on the first one.” Once you start doing the things you need to do, you will begin to gain momentum. This momentum will help you keep moving forward!

3. Narrow Your Focus.

Helen Keller said, “I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.” There are things in our daily life that will try to distract you and steal our momentum. There are things we must do, and there are things we want to do. To make great things happen, you must become disciplined in small things. We must narrow our focus and energy on things that help move us forward. Our brains can only focus on one or two things at a time. To achieve real success, you must apply your limited time and energy on the activities that move you forward. Sometimes this is done by trial and error, but once you gain momentum, keep applying your energy!

4. Track Your Progress and Do it With Accountability.

John Wooden said, “It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.” How can you celebrate wins if you’re not keeping score? The benefits of small steps come in frequent and consistent measurements. I recommend tracking your progress no less than monthly. The most significant advancements are measured in small increments. If you start getting off track, you have time to regain momentum. One of the greatest lessons – do NOT do it alone. Success is much more likely when you have consistent accountability; for both personal and organizational goals.

5. Celebrate the Wins-Weekly.

Do not wait too long to celebrate wins. In your weekly or frequent accountability meetings, you need to celebrate wins-especially when you had a rough week. You might need to identify small wins that add up to your overall vision of success. What does a win look like for you this week? What does a win look like for your department or program? I recommend a great book called The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling.
